WHUFC remained top of the Championship table today as they beat hated rival Millwall 2-1 in a hard fought, well earned victory at Upton Park. The Hammers were at a marked disadvantage most of the match having lost captain Kevin Nolan in the 9th minute. Nolan was sent off for a two footed challenge against Jack Smith.

Carlton Cole gave the Hammers their first lead scoring in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Millwall equalized midway through the second half but Winston Reid (pictured below) put the home side on top for good just three minutes later.

Ron Sen gives his take on the Francona exit.

I don’t feel bad for Terry Francona. I feel relieved for him. Francona helped to deliver a pair of championships to Boston fans, and he treated athletes like men, like professionals, and got stabbed in the back by them. I’m happy that he can leave the asylum on the ‘task oriented’ (hard guys) and ‘player-oriented’ roller coaster.

Terry Francona and the Sox have parted ways. Francona was an integral part of changing the fans psyche, along with guiding the team on the field to two World Series championships.

Last night with the Boston Bruins he won the Stanley Cup, shown here celebrating with Bruins President Cam Neely.

In 2007 he was on the WHL Vancouver Giants where he won the Memorial Cup, and the series MVP

I’ll always remember him telling me that before you ever got to Xs or Os or any of that technical stuff, a good coach had to start by showing a commanding presence to his players, that the coach is the boss and you had to carry yourself like a man who is not to be trifled with. He talked about how intimidating it could have been for a once junior coach from the Hull Olympiques to walk into the Montreal Canadiens dressing room for his first NHL coaching job and how for a coach to be successful, he had to strut into the room like it was his domain, the same way a cop walks into a bar where there’s been some trouble and is there to maintain order.
